The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is one of the standard bearers in the mid-size luxury-sedan segment.

There's a version for almost every taste--a feat almost matched by the BMW 5-Series and Audi A6, its closest rivals in prestige and performance.

Both have been recently redesigned, and the A6 is winning us over with its relative lightness and friendly road manners, while the 5-Series has grown dense and complex.

Infiniti's M sedan is a suave counterpart from Japan, with a choice of six- and eight-cylinder engines, and rear- or all-wheel drive.

Meanwhile, the Jaguar XF is a surprising enthusiasts' choice, with a classy look inside and out plus an eager performance driving feel.

This year it adds a few new interesting drivetrain choices, including a supercharged V-6 and an eight-speed automatic with an option for all-wheel drive, or even a very frugal, entry-level turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
