The Lexus LX 570 is a costly, hefty way to transport seven passengers to very remote corners of the globe.

A number of vehicles will do similar duty, often more easily and less expensively.

A Range Rover only seats five, but it's truly more capable off-road, more authentically luxurious, and more enjoyable to drive on pavement, especially with optional supercharging.

The Cadillac Escalade has more interior space and an available Hybrid model for better gas mileage, at least, though its packaging leaves much to be desired.

The Infiniti QX56 is a relative bargain, and feels more composed on pavement, though it doesn't have the storied off-roading history behind it.

The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is one of our top choices, especially with the available turbodiesel drivetrain; it's spacious, composed, and luxurious, and revamped for the 2013 model year.

If you're intent on the LX 570, at least consider the Land Cruiser, which offers the same packaging with arguably better off-road capability and a sticker price that's about $10,000 lower than that of the Lexus.
