The 2013 Lexus IS sedans are up against some tough competition--and most of that competition has been updated either completely or extensively in recent model years.

The BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class are the benchmarks in the segment, and both at the base level are now powered by smaller turbocharged four-cylinder engines that are more fuel-efficient without detracting from performance or refinement.

The Cadillac ATS is all-new to the segment, and in most respects it challenges the BMW 3-Series; steering and handling in particular are excellent, as are cabin appointments, and Cadillac's CUE infotainment interface is one of the most advanced.

The Audi A4 is more fuel-efficient and has a great interior, though it can also feel a little noisy and coarse.

The Infiniti G37 has a powerful 332-horsepower engine, with well-balanced sports-sedan styling and proportions, plus available all-wheel drive, and it's priced competitively.

Quick Specs
Meta Rating
7.4
The 2013 Lexus IS 250 and IS 350 look like exciting sport sedans--especially in F Sport guise--though they're not as fun to drive or even as fuel-efficient as other small sport sedans.
8.2
Magnificent design and technology sets the Audi A4 apart, but it's not quite as sporty as its BMW and Cadillac competition.
8.6
The 2013 BMW 3-Series is safe, fuel-efficient, and well-connected, yet it delivers the class-leading performance and handling that enthusiasts have come to expect.
8.8
With unerring focus on handling, Cadillac finally has the 3-Series' number with the 2013 ATS.
7.8
The 2013 Infiniti G37 offers some of the sensory thrills of a sports car, in a more practical sedan body style, although it's not as refined as other premium-brand alternatives.
8.2
For those who are image-conscious yet value-conscious, the 2013 Mercedes-Benz C Class sedans and coupes make a lot of sense.
