The Range Rover Sport cribs big-brother style and image on a chassis it shares with the LR4, so off-road performance is great, while on-road it's blazingly quick.

The amazing highwire act isn't matched by many SUVs, but the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X6 comes close.

Both have rounded silhouettes and uprated performance editions with turbochargers and scalding straight-line acceleration, though neither is as capable off-road as the Rover.

The Mercedes M-Class is a closer match; it's new this year, with an ML63 performance edition on the way, and it's a refined, evolved version of the last-gen M-Class.

Infiniti's FX50 has thumping V-8 power but very little ground clearance; it's a Rubenesque sportscar at heart.

On the outer fringes of this spectrum, but totally in the crossover mainstream, is the five-seat Lincoln MKX, which puts its best foot forward with great interior space and a fine cabin, with controversial MyLincoln touch and voice controls as standard equipment.
