The boxy Patriot lands right between small, quirky tall crossover-hatchback models like the Kia Soul, Nissan Cube, Nissan Juke, or Scion xB, and more practical models like the Escape and Forester.

Among those, it’s one of the few to have a true off-road package, with shielding and upgrades like the Jeep.

The Ford Escape has received a radical makeover for this year, however, and it's now far more sophisticated.

The Subaru Forester is also due for a redesign, and is expected to make gains in refinement and interior space.

The Nissan Cube is something of a design oddity, taking the boxy, refrigerator look to a stylish extreme—and sacrificing some functionality in the process—while the Scion xB looks like it would offer quite a bit of space and versatility and it ends up surprisingly cramped.

For those looking at smaller models, there’s also the Kia Soul, which drives like a small car but has no off-road ability.
