The Jeep Grand Cherokee has remained resolute and rugged while other family trucksters have gone the crossover route.

Yep, we're looking at you, Ford Explorer--you're still a sharp-steering, quick-footed way to tote up to seven passengers, but you're no off-roader like the Jeep.

The Land Rover LR4 is the Grand Cherokee's equal, but it's also priced far higher, and has much less favorable history behind its reliability record.

The VW Touareg? Some of the same, with less of a storied history of trailblazer.

For the crossover crowd, the Grand Cherokee's rivals could include the Chevy Traverse or Equinox, strictly on a people-carrying basis--but we think the Subaru Outback is closest to its temperament and its utility.
