In the seven years since the Jeep Compass was first introduced, it's gone from an alternative to somewhat larger, more family-oriented compact crossovers to part of a growing class of smaller crossover models.

Among them, the Nissan Juke is perhaps the sportiest, yet the least practical.

The MINI Countryman is also at the sporty side of this group; it offers a lot of interior space, although its ride can be harsh and it doesn’t offer much if any off-road ability.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, on the other hand, has a somewhat better-designed interior and a comfortable ride, although it suffers from some of the same refinement issues as the Compass.

The Subaru XV Crosstrek is a more carlike vehicle, but it’s surprisingly tough and fuel-efficient; the down side here too is refinement.

The Hyundai Tucson is compact and easy to park like the Compass, but more cohesive and stylish in design.

The 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek aims to provide the kind of trail ability and space for gear that weekend adventurer types need; but it also looks like a great value for Snow Belt commuters and small families -- and an alternative to bulkier crossover utilities.

The biggest MINI, the Countryman adds crossover flexibility to the lineup without diluting the fun-to-drive factor too much.
