2014 Jaguar XJ vs. Its Competition

2014 Jaguar XJR - First Drive - August 2013 (closed course)

The current Jaguar XJ was radically different a couple of years ago when it was redesigned, and it remains an outlier today.

And with better efficiency and all-wheel drive introduced last year, plus a new XJR this year, it's an especially strong competitor if you want a break from the other executive-class luxury offerings.

The Audi A7 and its stunning, swift S7 companion piece are the sexiest rivals from Germany; or you could include the more traditional-looking A8, in short- and long-wheelbase form.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is all-new for 2014, but it doesn't break with tradition and continues to up the technology ante, as it's done for decades.

The new BMW 6-Series Gran Sport takes the four-door coupe idea to a bulkier conclusion, and to our eyes, it's the least sultry-looking of that subset.

An outlier and relative bargain is the Infiniti Q70 (formerly the Q56); it's a breakout performer but far less refined than the others.

Quick Specs
Had enough with the stoicism and tech overload of German flagships? The 2014 Jaguar XJ is a completely different kind of luxury car, with swinging style, a light, lean driving character, and a wide range of engines--including a new high-performance 550-hp XJR
With TDI range and captivating connectivity, the 2014 Audi A8 adds very long-distance touring to its considerable portfolio of talents.
The basic 2014 Audi A7 is gorgeous, yes--but you'll swoon from the heady mix of raw sex appeal and torrid performance in the S7 and RS 7.
No matter whether it's a coupe, convertible, or Gran Coupe, the 2014 BMW 6-Series covers soft and elegant as well as it does sharp and athletic.
The 2014 Infiniti Q70 sedan range is fast, fun-to-drive, better to look at, and comfortable--a world-class combination.
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLS retains its fashion-forward look, while adding efficiency and, in AMG form, even more impressive performance.
