2014 Jaguar XF vs. Its Competition

2014 Jaguar XFR-S - First Drive - August 2013
Marty Padgett Marty Padgett Editorial Director

The 2014 Jaguar XF fits alongside some of the world's strongest mid-size luxury and sport sedans as if it was always there; it's easy to forget that before the XF the brand's models, like the S-Type, were strictly niche players.

That said, the BMW 5-Series offers turbocharged V-8 performance and pretty impressive handling, though it's grown a little bloated in size and techno features.

The Audi A6 and A7 have especially gorgeous styling, but their on-the-road handling and performance are more muted.

One final alternative is the Infiniti Q70 (formerly the M56); it's less glitzy inside, but has a level of athleticism that rivals that of the XF.

And the E-Class is now offered in an incredibly vast array of models, including diesel, hybrid, and gas.

It's just been facelifted, and it's also sold as a coupe and cabriolet, and hyper-performing AMG editions.

Quick Specs
8.2
With backseat space as the one caveat, the 2014 Jaguar XF lineup can at once be refined, nimble, and a scorcher of a performer in XFR or exclusive XFR-S guise.
8.6
Brilliance takes many forms in the Audi A6: the diesel-driven TDI, the supercharged A6, or the turbocharged S6 all stand out in ways the sedate body doesn't quite match.
8.8
The basic 2014 Audi A7 is gorgeous, yes--but you'll swoon from the heady mix of raw sex appeal and torrid performance in the S7 and RS 7.
8.2
The 2014 BMW 5-Series is simultaneously a classic sport sedan and a technology-packed grand tourer.
8.8
The 2014 Infiniti Q70 sedan range is fast, fun-to-drive, better to look at, and comfortable--a world-class combination.
8.4
What, me worry? The Mercedes-Benz E-Class reasserts its alpha status with a tighter forehead, a greener turbodiesel, and a pair of all-wheel-drive AMGs.
