In this tightly competitive class of sport sedans, the benchmark has long been the BMW 5-Series; in its latest version, which was new this past year, the 5er offers turbocharged V-8 performance and pretty impressive handling.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has become a little more aggressive; a V-8 and four-wheel drive are offered, too, but it's not quite a driver's cr in the same way as the XF.
In truth the Jaguar XF bears more than a passing resemblance to it from the outside.
The Audi A6 has been fully redesigned for 2012, but it's quite conservative on the inside and the new A7 might actually be a better alternative; both cars have a stunning interior.
One other alternative is the Infiniti M56; it offers an athleticism that rivals that of the XF, but you'll have to deal with less interior refinement.
