The Maserati GranTurismo Convertible, particularly in Sport guise, is in many ways the closest of the competition to the Ferrari, despite coming from their co-owned "junior" brand; power comes from a lusty V-8, there's a convertible top (though it's cloth) and, of course, classic Italian styling.

Porsche's latest-generation 911 Cabrio likewise doesn't offer a folding hard top, but it does offer stellar handling, all-wheel-drive practicality, and similar practicality in a stylishly German package.

BMW's 6-Series might not seem a natural competitor to the California, but with the 2013 model, BMW has moved the 6-Series into the high end of power, comfort, and style.

Mercedes-Benz's SL Class is likewise endowed with a healthy engine and ample style, but its exterior might not be quite to everyone's fancy, and it's a decided step back on handling and performance.
