Our expert editors build comparisons like this one to make it easy for you to understand the small handful of cars you should compare to whatever car you are already looking at. You get general thoughts on each car you should consider plus an easy way to compare basic information for yourself.

There still isn't a large group of competition in the upper strata of the mid-engine supercar world, but there are some go-to alternatives if you're in the market for something stylish, fast, and exclusive.

The Audi R8 offers all-wheel drive where the 458 Italia doesn't, and the V-10 model offers similar power and performance, though the Italia still has the edge at the limits of performance in terms of handling and driver engagement.

The Lamborghini Gallardo is very similar to the R8, though with more dramatic--if increasingly dated--styling.

Nissan's GT-R is competition only in the "and now for something completely different" sense--it's a world apart in styling, mechanical nature, and reputation, but it delivers similarly breathtaking performance.

Chevrolet's upper tier of performance Corvettes, including the Z06 and ZR1, are competition for any supercar on the track, and though they're leagues apart in styling, exclusivity, and cabin quality, they're legitimate alternatives for the bargain hunter with a need for speed.

The 2013 SRT Viper hasn't yet been tested on track by our editors, but based on the previous generation's capabilities, it will likely be a rival or superior to any other production supercar--on track, at least--and the 2013 model's upgrades to quality and refinement may elevate it to contender status on other fronts as well.

Meta Rating
N/A
The 2013 Ferrari 458 Italia is everything an Italian supercar should be: fierce, balanced, stylish, and, at times, temperamental.
8.8
Balanced, comfortable, and very fast (or very, very fast), the 2013 Chevrolet Corvette promises to ring out the C6 generation with grace and aptitude as well as attitude.
8
The 2013 Dodge SRT Viper is undeniably a supercar, fearsome in its aspect and performance, but it still has some rough edges--and might not command the respect an Italian or German marque would.
8.6
At a fraction of the price, the 2013 Nissan GT-R beats some of the top supercars to the punch, although their sensuality is missing.
8
It might not be the youngest supercar on the block, but the 2013 Lamborghini Gallardo still hits all the right notes for a high-performance car with an exotic look.
9.2
A marriage of the best of German handling and Italian power, the 2012 Audi R8 is a fantastic all-around supercar.
