Our expert editors build comparisons like this one to make it easy for you to understand the small handful of cars you should compare to whatever car you are already looking at. You get general thoughts on each car you should consider plus an easy way to compare basic information for yourself.

The Avenger's standout design really is its best attribute.

Otherwise, models like the Kia Optima and Hyundai Sonata are better-performing, more fuel-efficient, and for the most part, more comfortable.

But on the other hand, neither the Sonata nor the Optima offer a V-6.

The Ford Fusion is all-new for 2013 and is now in a completely different league than the Avenger, with far superior design and a new generation of small turbocharged four-cylinder engines that are very fuel-efficient.

With a new focus on value, the Volkswagen Jetta is another alternative to the Avenger; it's more cohesive, design-wise, inside and out, and a clean-diesel engine, with up to 42 mpg on the highway, is available.

The 2013 Dodge Avenger has an eye-catching design and is well-equipped, but it failed to provide an inspiring driving experience.
9
The 2013 Ford Fusion's more than a rock-star body: it handles better than any other family sedan we've driven, and doesn't cheat on interior room to deliver it.
8.6
With a standout design; perky performance; great gas mileage; and exceptional value for the money, the 2013 Hyundai Sonata is one of the best buys among mid-size sedans.
8.6
The 2013 Kia Optima adds generous dashes of style and sophistication to what's otherwise a sensible, frugal, and spacious mid-size sedan.
