While the Tahoe takes a more conservative, handsome styling approach, both the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia amp up the macho design cues inside and out.

The Armada performs quite well, but it's one of the thirstiest vehicles in this class and doesn't feel very refined.

Meanwhile, the Sequoia doesn't handle or ride as well, and its interior can feel a little too plasticky.

The Ford Expedition remains the Tahoe's top rival; the Ford's engine has power and torque numbers that are close to those of the Chevy, yet it doesn't feel as quick.

The Expedition does ride a bit better, and its handling is impressive, especially when comparing base models.

The Expedition is also due to get an engine upgrade to the new 5.0-liter, which will put it on more of a level playing ground.

The Dodge Durango is also a rival, although with underpinnings shared with the Jeep Grand Cherokee and a stretched body, it's a different sort of beat, aimed at personal use and with more than a hint that it's taking on the luxury brands.

The Mercedes-Benz GL 350 BlueTec is probably the top rival to the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid, with great highway fuel economy, and quiet, strong, soot-free performance.
