In the Impala's competitive set, there are plenty of modern, well-updated alternatives with more design pizazz yet about the same amount of interior space.
The Toyota Avalon is a good choice for those who value comfort above all else; it offers the most features in the class and especially rich, impressive materials inside--although it's still hard to say that it has a lot of personality.
In terms of safety, the Ford Taurus is the champion, with enviable crash-test results and a Volvo-enhanced platform; it's also as daring as the Chrysler 300, which has been significantly revamped with a beautiful interior and a better base powertrain.
And the Hyundai Azera is all-new for 2012; its distinctive new design helps position it as more of a luxury car--and all the comfort is there.
