Among the many available compact sedans, the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze is aimed the middle of the market--with a strong nod to those who want high fuel efficiency too.

It faces new competition from a completely redesigned and sportier-looking Toyota Corolla that will likely do well.

The latest interior updates to the Honda Civic bring it back from a disastrous 2012 redesign that left it looking cheaper than any other compact.

Both the Corolla and Civic are newer and fresher cars that the four-year-old Cruze.

But its refinement, comfort, and features hold up well, and it remains handsome and comfortable inside and out.

The Ford Focus and Volkswagen Jetta are somewhat sportier than the Cruze, which is at its strongest racking up highway miles quietly and comfortably.

The Jetta is the only other compact that offers a diesel option, but the Cruze Diesel is more powerful and likely returns equal or better real-world fuel economy.

And the Hyundai Elantra is a strong competitor, with prices consistently lower than the Cruze--though Chevy dealers will bargain to even the difference.

Finally, the Mazda3 is the sportiest contender, with surefooted handling and roadholding; its new SkyActiv engine returns impressive real-world gas mileage without the need for a turbo.
