A premium car with a bargain pricetag, conservative looks and performance, the Verano has surprisingly few direct competitors--the way Buick likes it, actually.

Two of them live inside the Acura brand; the 201-hp TSX sedan and wagon have good handling and more interior space, but Acura's latest front-end styling and dated connectivity show how the brand has slipped in the near-luxury ranks.

The Audi A3 is in its last year before being replaced by a new sedan; the hatchback has pert handling and available turbodiesel power, but high prices.

The all but forgotten Lexus IS 250 comes on to luxury import shoppers with V-6 power and rear-wheel drive, but suffers from a small back seat and lackluster handling.

Finally, we'd throw in the Volvo C30 hatchback, simply because it's stylish and safe like the Verano, and appeals to buyers looking for something "else."
