2013 Buick Verano vs. Its Competition

2013 Buick Verano T
Marty Padgett Marty Padgett Editorial Director

A premium car with a bargain pricetag, conservative looks and performance, the Verano has surprisingly few direct competitors--the way Buick likes it, actually.

Two of them live inside the Acura brand; the 201-hp TSX sedan and wagon have good handling and more interior space, but Acura's latest front-end styling and dated connectivity show how the brand has slipped in the near-luxury ranks.

The Audi A3 is in its last year before being replaced by a new sedan; the hatchback has pert handling and available turbodiesel power, but high prices.

The all but forgotten Lexus IS 250 comes on to luxury import shoppers with V-6 power and rear-wheel drive, but suffers from a small back seat and lackluster handling.

Finally, we'd throw in the Volvo C30 hatchback, simply because it's stylish and safe like the Verano, and appeals to buyers looking for something "else."

Quick Specs
8.2
Comfortable, well-appointed and inexpensive on the luxury-car scale, the 2013 Buick Verano is a mild performer--that is, until the turbo T arrives later this year.
8.0
For nearly all compact-sedan shoppers except serious enthusiasts or green-car fanatics, the 2013 Acura TSX strikes an agreeable compromise between sport-sedan attitude and premium-car practicality.
7.4
The 2013 Acura ILX is a balanced, if compromised, entry-level/near-luxury sedan that combines fun and style for an affordable price.
8.0
The 2013 Audi A3 wears its age well, and remains a sporty, versatile choice for compact hatchback buyers who can afford a little luxury.
8.0
The 2013 Volvo C30 still has a stunning design, inside and out, but its performance and practicality can easily be beat.
