2015 BMW i8 vs. Its Competition

It's hard to work out exactly what the 2015 BMW i8 competes with, except that it's got to be fast and have a six-figure price.

Technically, the Porsche 918 Spyder uses a similar powertrain concept--but its performance is turned all the way up to 11, and it comes at a cost almost eight times as high.

Among more traditional sports cars, the classic Porsche 911--recently redesigned for a new decade--and the raucous Audi R8 are larger, heavier, and conventionally powered, which may be viewed as a safer choice by wealthy, conservative buyers.

Perhaps BMW's own 6-Series coupe, with capacity for four--perhaps even its Z4 two-seater--may compete across the showroom floor.

In fact, we think one of the stronger competitors may be the Tesla Model S.

It's a completely different car--a five-door luxury battery-electric sedan--but its buyers may be far more attuned to a light, forward-looking plug-in coupe with high efficiency than those of more traditional sports cars.
