2014 BMW 7-Series vs. Its Competition

Traditionalist German ultra-luxury sedans like the Audi A8 and Mercedes-Benz S-Class are the 7-Series' main rivals; although it also takes on the Porsche Panamera, Jaguar XJ, and Aston Martin Rapide.

An all-new S-Class that's arriving this year looks more luxury- and technology-oriented than ever before, and it takes a big step forward in interior design.

The new Audi A8 looks less convincingly different today than it did a few years ago, but it's a swift, stable performer with a marvelous interior.

The Porsche Panamera has a surprisingly spacious backseat, yet it obliterates all these cars with a 0-60 mph time of about 3.3 seconds for Turbo models.

Perhaps the sexiest entry here is the Jaguar XJ, which has an especially swanky interior, but it's not all that functional as the new shape cuts rear-seat room.

Finally, the Aston Martin Rapide has been better-focused for performance this year.

Enter the Rapide S, which is even more stunning from the driver's seat, yet still just as compromised for back-seat space.
