As the driver's Bentley sedan, there's only one real natural competitor, the Rolls-Royce Ghost.

As the driver's sedan of the Rolls-Royce range, it closely matches the Flying Spur in terms of power, luxury, equipment, and style.

Mercedes-Benz's S600, while not springing from so exclusive a niche, offers much in the way of a similar driving experience; the S63 and S65 AMG models go to even more extreme levels of large-sedan performance.

All S Class models come up a touch short in terms of opulence, however.

The Maserati Quattroporte takes a sportier angle at the luxury sedan theme, with Italian flair and style.

Porsche's Panamera offers even more incredible sporting performance, as well as a very well-trimmed interior, but its slightly awkward exterior and more ordinary interior likely take it out of the equation for the Bentley shopper.

The 2013 Maserati Quattroporte performs with some of the verve of a sports car, and aims to make new converts from those who drive stodgy luxury cars.
