How does the
TCC Rating work?
The TCC Rating is a clear numeric rating value based on a 10-point scale that reflects the overall opinion of our automotive experts on any vehicle and rolls up ratings we give each vehicle across sub-categories you care about like performance, safety, styling and more.

Our rating also has simple color-coded “Stop” (red), “Caution” (orange),
or “Go” (green) messages along with the numerical score so you can easily understand where we stand at a glance.

Our automotive experts then also collect and show you what other websites say about these different aspects of any vehicle. We do this leg work for you to simplify your research process.

Our expert editors build comparisons like this one to make it easy for you to understand the small handful of cars you should compare to whatever car you are already looking at. You get general thoughts on each car you should consider plus an easy way to compare basic information for yourself.

Compact, crossover, luxury--the intersection of those terms is a relatively new set of vehicles with timeless brand names and a clear mission to displace some mass-market utes out of some driveways.

The Buick Encore's already on sale, and it's been a moderate hit for the GM brand; it's compact and nimble enough, but not at all quick and more premium than luxurious in feel.

The BMW X1 strikes us as more fun to drive than the Encore, but the back seat is so small and the pricetag so high--wouldn't you rather have a 2-Series? The Q3's head-to-head competition will likely be the Mercedes GLA, a CLA-Class spin-off ready to roll with an AMG edition and more headroom than in the decidedly cramped CLA rear seat.

The 2015 Mercedes GLA isn't the roomiest small crossover, but it's a stylish vehicle with a double shot of urban attitude--and a dash of ruggedness--that looks fully up to Mercedes-Benz luxury standards.

The 2014 BMW X1 has plenty of style and enthusiasm, although it's a little short on some of the versatility and utility you might expect.

The 2014 Buick Encore is one of very few subcompact premium crossovers, and it mostly does well in that role--but it could use more power.
