Bottomline Despite rather conservative styling, the 2009 Saab 9-3 is one of the boldest performers in its class. The 2009 Subaru Legacy appeals to rugged, sporty, and practical types, but not those who expect top refinement. The 2008 Volvo S60 is a comfortable, safe all-weather sedan, but if you want top sport-sedan performance, you should look elsewhere.

  • Base turbo engine is both strong and fuel-efficient
  • Crisp steering and great handling
  • Nice interior design

Dislikes:

  • Pricey, even compared against luxury competitors
  • Too-firm ride in Aero and Turbo X
  • Cut-rate GM switchgear is obvious in a few cases

Likes:

  • Sporty handling, especially in Spec.B
  • Choice of three engines, each different in character
  • Safety equipment
  • All-wheel-drive confidence

Dislikes:

  • Noisy interior
  • Base engine lacks refinement
  • Still no Bluetooth

Likes:

  • Excellent front seats
  • Decent ride comfort, even in the T5
  • Hushed interior

Dislikes:

  • Swoopy roofline limits backseat headroom
  • Small trunk opening
  • Design now looks quite dated
