Bottomline Hyundai is no longer bargain-basement-priced, but the hard-to-fault 2008 Santa Fe has all the refinement of comparable rivals with a little more flair. Though the first-generation Outlander was often overlooked, the updated 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander has emerged as a well-rounded vehicle--and one of the sportiest-driving small crossovers. The 2008 Suzuki XL7 should be especially appealing to families who want a roomy vehicle with a small third-row seat for occasional use but don’t want to pay the higher sticker price or extra fuel expenses of larger SUVs.

  • Just-right sized (read: compact-only spaces!)

  • Busier ride than most other crossovers
  • Steering wheel doesn’t telescope
  • Faux woodgrain won’t win friends

Likes:

  • Drives more like a small sport sedan
  • More aggressive styling than most small crossovers
  • V-6 brings brisk performance
  • Excellent steering and handling

Dislikes:

  • Four-cylinder is slow and loud, but not much more frugal
  • Steering wheel doesn’t telescope
  • Noisier interior than typical
  • Ridiculously small third seat

Likes:

  • Very smooth ride
  • Quiet, refined cabin
  • Strong acceleration

Dislikes:

  • Third row is very difficult to access
  • Only adequate handling
