Bottomline The 2009 Honda CR-V is a clear winner for those seeking security and utility at a good price, provided hip styling or street cred isn't near the top of the list. It’s significantly improved this year, but the 2009 Subaru Forester remains a unique all-wheel-drive crossover with less power and fewer features, but better carlike handling, than its competition. The 2008 Toyota RAV4 brings a little more space than most compact SUVs without a mid-size price.

  • Still not a great-looking machine
  • No manual gearbox on turbo models
  • Only four speeds on automatic

  • Spare tire in back makes no sense for a road vehicle
