Bottomline The 2008 Honda CR-V doesn't have hip style or performance on tap, but it has the security, utility, and frugality that many sensible moms want. The 2009 Jeep Liberty is a very capable SUV, but one that might not be right for most everyday drivers. It’s significantly improved this year, but the 2009 Subaru Forester remains a unique all-wheel-drive crossover with less power and fewer features, but better carlike handling, than its competition.

  • One of the safest vehicles of its size and type
  • Attractive yet simple instrument panel and controls
  • Especially frugal on fuel

Dislikes:

  • Transmission reluctant to downshift
  • Styling is ungainly to some eyes
  • Rear pillar obscures rearward vision

Likes:

  • Off-road efficacy
  • Size of sunroof
  • Replaceable fender flares

Dislikes:

  • Poor fuel economy
  • Cramped rear legroom
  • Interior materials
  • Truckish ride and handing
  • Lethargic acceleration

  • Reduced interior noise
  • All-wheel drive

Dislikes:

  • Still not a great-looking machine
  • No manual gearbox on turbo models
  • Only four speeds on automatic
