Bottomline Those who have serious towing needs and consider full-size SUVs too ponderous will find the 2007 Ford Explorer just right. The 2009 GMC Envoy is only somewhat suited to hauling passengers from point A to point B. But if you tow frequently, the Envoy might still make sense.

  • Stable handling
  • Great interior design
  • Power-folding third-row seat

Dislikes:

  • Engine noise (V-6)
  • Ride isn’t as settled as that of newer crossover SUVs
  • Resale value is an open question

Likes:

  • Reasonably smooth ride
  • Relatively low loading height and step-up for a truck
  • Solid towing ability

Dislikes:

  • Noisy interior, coarse engine sound
  • Doesn’t handle well
  • Not as safe as newer crossover designs
  • Past-its-prime styling
