Bottomline Though it looks decidedly old-school, the Ford Escape is a solid and stylish five-passenger, compact SUV that has been kept up-to-date. Much less of a cute-ute than it used to be, the 2008 Jeep Liberty defines SUV-lites by not being one.

  • Complex process for folding rear seat

  • Great off-road capabilities
  • Enormous Sky Slider roof
  • More interior room
  • Better on-road ride
  • Replaceable fender flares

Dislikes:

  • Lackadaisical acceleration
  • Trucklike ride and handing
  • Quality of interior bits
  • Tight rear legroom
  • Not great fuel economy
