Bottomline Though it looks decidedly old-school, the Ford Escape is a solid and stylish five-passenger, compact SUV that has been kept up-to-date. The 2008 Hyundai Tucson no longer stands out in its class for performance or safety, but it’s still a great value.

  • Improved power and fuel economy
  • Responsive six-speed automatic transmission
  • Technologically advanced infotainment system
  • Well-rounded safety package

Dislikes:

  • Still not very refined
  • Complex process for folding rear seat
  • Uncomfortable backseat

Likes:

  • All-wheel-drive system has a center diff lock
  • Roomy back-seat for two
  • Base model is a very strong value

Dislikes:

  • Styling is starting to look dated
  • Neither engine is especially frisky or frugal
  • Mushy handling doesn’t inspire confidence
  • Ride can be pitchy
