Bottomline Though it looks decidedly old-school, the Ford Escape is a solid and stylish five-passenger, compact SUV that has been kept up-to-date. The 2008 Honda CR-V doesn't have hip style or performance on tap, but it has the security, utility, and frugality that many sensible moms want. The 2008 Toyota RAV4 brings a little more space than most compact SUVs without a mid-size price.

  • Complex process for folding rear seat

  • Smooth and refined powertrain
  • One of the safest vehicles of its size and type
  • Attractive yet simple instrument panel and controls
  • Especially frugal on fuel

Dislikes:

  • Transmission reluctant to downshift
  • Styling is ungainly to some eyes
  • Rear pillar obscures rearward vision

  • V-6’s athleticism
  • Extra off-road electronics
  • Fuel efficiency
  • Spacious interior

Dislikes:

  • Spare tire in back makes no sense for a road vehicle
  • Side-opening hatch
  • Third row is only for tykes

    i personally liked escape better than rav4 after test driving.
