Bottomline As a smaller crossover, the Journey's a good alternative to the Saturn Vue and Subaru Forester, maybe even to a Dodge Grand Caravan--just don't pile on the expensive options. Though it looks decidedly old-school, the Ford Escape is a solid and stylish five-passenger, compact SUV that has been kept up-to-date.

  • Interior styling and materials
  • Steering feel on all-wheel-drive models
  • Pricey if you don't watch it.

  • Improved power and fuel economy
  • Responsive six-speed automatic transmission
  • Technologically advanced infotainment system
  • Well-rounded safety package

Dislikes:

  • Still not very refined
  • Complex process for folding rear seat
  • Uncomfortable backseat
