Bottomline The Caliber has a very practical layout and quite a few innovative features to get excited about, but it's lacking in driving enjoyment or refinement--even compared to its low-priced competition. The 2008 Nissan Versa isn’t particularly sporty, fashionable, or innovative, but it offers an astonishing amount of space, comfort, and features for the money. The small-hatchback competition is growing, but with a new look, upgraded powertrains, and bolstered safety features, the new 2009 Pontiac Vibe should be a top choice.

  • Comfortable seats
  • Impressive interior flexibility

Dislikes:

  • Interior materials are subpar
  • Difficult access to the backseats
  • Sharp edges of center stack can be a pain in the knee
  • Tepid acceleration in SE and SXT
  • Engine noise with CVT automatic

Likes:

  • Very spacious, quiet interior
  • Supple ride for a small car
  • Simple but attractive instrument panel
  • Good crash-test results
  • Available Bluetooth interface

Dislikes:

  • Lacks the agile feel of other small cars its size
  • Fuel economy is only passable
  • Engine gets very noisy when accelerating

Likes:

  • Torquey 2.4-liter engine provides good power in AWD and GT
  • Commendable fuel economy
  • Roomy hatchback body style
  • Extensive list of safety features

Dislikes:

  • Difficult visibility due to wide rear pillar
  • Quite small cargo area with backseats up
