Bottomline The Caliber has a very practical layout and quite a few innovative features to get excited about, but it's lacking in driving enjoyment or refinement--even compared to its low-priced competition. The 2008 Hyundai Elantra doesn’t have a lot of personality, but it’s the undeniable practical choice. The 2008 Suzuki Forenza still offers a lot of features for the money, but its older design lags in performance, refinement, and safety.

  • Sharp edges of center stack can be a pain in the knee

  • Engine noise with CVT automatic

Likes:

  • Very roomy interior, with adult-worthy back-seat space
  • Huge trunk
  • Responsive acceleration, even with automatic
  • Respectable fuel economy ratings

Dislikes:

  • Conservative exterior styling plays it too safe
  • Doesn’t feel as sporty as other small cars
  • Engine noise can be prominent when accelerating

Likes:

  • Long standard feature list
  • Spacious interior
  • Available Bluetooth on such an inexpensive car

Dislikes:

  • Dated design
  • Uninspiring handling
  • Interior materials and surfaces
  • Poor fuel economy
