Bottomline Families can do much better with any of the more modern crossover SUV designs—including Chevy’s own Traverse—but the 2009 Chevrolet TrailBlazer is still a good vehicle for towing purposes. If you plan to tow, a 2008 Dodge Durango with a V-8 will work nearly as well as a Tahoe or Expedition, at a lower price. The 2008 Toyota 4Runner isn’t as roomy or as efficient as newer crossover designs, but if you need towing or off-road capabilities, it’s a good, safe choice.

  • Out-of-date design
  • Behind the curve in safety
  • Noisy interior
  • Clumsy on-road handling

Likes:

  • Comfortable seating
  • Features—like MyGIG—stray from the norm

Dislikes:

  • Slightly smaller than the full-size utes, but not any more maneuverable
  • Bouncy ride and queasy handling
  • V-6 doesn’t offer any fuel-economy advantage
  • High loading height in back

Likes:

  • Quick acceleration from either engine
  • Handles quite well
  • Quiet interior
  • Good occupant protection

Dislikes:

  • Busy ride
  • Tight interior space and barely usable third row
  • Interior materials feel skimpy
  • Fuel economy is poor
