Bottomline The new available V-8 engine is a long time coming and helps position the Colorado as a worthy rival to the most capable compacts and an alternative to full-size trucks. With the addition of the new V-8 option, the 2009 GMC Canyon goes from unappealing to quite competitive. The 2009 Mazda B-Series is frugal and performs decently, but its styling is dated and safety equipment isn’t up to modern standards.

Likes:

  • Acceleration with the V-8
  • Fuel efficiency with the four
  • Choice of body styles
  • In short-bed form, a real compact truck

Dislikes:

  • Doesn’t steer as well as some rivals
  • The longer six-foot might still be too short
  • Lots of chintzy hard plastic inside
  • Rough-running four- and five-cylinders
  • Five-cylinder gets V-8 gas mileage

Likes:

  • Relaxed and fast demeanor with the V-8
  • Range of body styles and configurations
  • Frugal four-cylinder/manual drivetrain
  • In its short-bed form, it’s a true compact truck

  • Steering/roadholding
  • Rough, noisy four- and five-cylinders
  • Unimpressive plastics inside
  • No bed longer than six feet
