Bottomline The new available V-8 engine is a long time coming and helps position the Colorado as a worthy rival to the most capable compacts and an alternative to full-size trucks. The 2010 Ford Ranger isn’t so modern and refined, but it’s a practical, fuel-efficient, and reasonably safe choice for those who just want a truck. With the addition of the new V-8 option, the 2009 GMC Canyon goes from unappealing to quite competitive.

  • Rough-running four- and five-cylinders
  • Five-cylinder gets V-8 gas mileage

  • No full four-door body style
  • Longest bed is just six feet
