Bottomline The new available V-8 engine is a long time coming and helps position the Colorado as a worthy rival to the most capable compacts and an alternative to full-size trucks. Especially with the improved V-8, the 2008 Dodge Dakota can do most of what a full-size truck can while consuming fewer resources in the process. The 2008 GMC Canyon is right-sized for today’s gas prices -- if only its engines were quieter and its rear seats more comfortable.

  • In short-bed form, a real compact truck

  • Doesn’t steer as well as some rivals
  • The longer six-foot might still be too short
  • Lots of chintzy hard plastic inside
  • Rough-running four- and five-cylinders
  • Five-cylinder gets V-8 gas mileage

  • Available V-8 power
  • Full-swing rear doors (extended cab)
  • Interior cargo management system
  • Electronics integration
  • Exterior size

Dislikes:

  • Mushy handling
  • Four-wheel ABS optional
  • Quality issues

  • For better or worse, it’s smaller
  • Choice of body styles
  • Gas-sipping four-cylinder/manual drivetrain

Dislikes:

  • No V-6 or V-8 option
  • Midgrade plastics in the cabin
  • No bed longer than six feet
  • Flat rear bench that doesn’t stow in the floor
