Bottomline Considering the weight of the Escalade’s image and its segment-leading performance, the 2009 Cadillac Escalade is hard to beat. The 2008 Lexus LX 570 comes loaded with worthwhile technology, but it's not as distinctive as a Range Rover or an Escalade. The 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is expensive, but it's very capable and family-friendly with lots of room, power, and safety equipment.

  • Combination of soft, plush interior and bold, macho exterior
  • Good handling for such a tall, heavy vehicle
  • Big V-8 with lots of torque

Dislikes:

  • Drinks gas like water
  • Not enough high-tech optional equipment
  • Third-row seat design doesn't fold neatly

Likes:

  • Off-road electronics make rock-crawling a no-brainer
  • One of the best towing vehicles
  • Nicely designed instrument panel and materials

Dislikes:

  • Rock-bottom fuel economy
  • Ride quality isn’t so comfy
  • Third-row seat doesn’t fold completely into floor
  • All the feel of piloting three tons

Likes:

  • Cosmopolitan cabin with tons of room
  • Stylish exterior
  • Off-road capability

Dislikes:

  • Expensive
  • Fuel economy (gas engines)
