Bottomline The 2009 BMW X5 is one of the better-handling utility vehicles of any shape, and a newly available diesel makes it even more appealing, but its styling and interior fail to wow. Considering the weight of the Escalade’s image and its segment-leading performance, the 2009 Cadillac Escalade is hard to beat. The 2008 Lexus GX 470 brings off-road credentials to the Lexus brand, but its skimpy rear-seat room and sluggish performance tarnish the image.

  • Third-row seat design doesn't fold neatly

  • Disappointing styling

  • The 2008 Lexus GX 470 is based on the Toyota 4Runner, but a distinctive look inside and out, and a big new engine, give it passable luxury credentials.
