Bottomline With its uprated edition and more muscular styling, the 2010 Audi TT edges closer to the border between sporty cars and true sports cars. The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class combines the romance of a small roadster with grand-touring comfort, as well as the poise and performance of a larger sportscar. The Nissan Z has never occupied the top spot in the performance world—and it doesn't now—but it's still a great performance car that starts just under $30,000.

Likes:

  • Great turbo and S-tronic drivetrain
  • Urbane cabin with understated style
  • Plenty of cargo space-in a sports car?
  • Compact, quick-folding convertible top

Dislikes:

  • Latest body lacks original's Deco flair
  • MMI controller seems wrong in a roadster
  • Minuscule rear seats in TT coupes
  • Starts expensively, and stays up there

Likes:

  • Borrows styling from the more expensive SLR McLaren and SL
  • Great seats
  • Very settled ride, for a roadster
  • Well-designed retractable hardtop
  • More than adequate acceleration (SLK350 and SLK55)

Dislikes:

  • Doesn't feel as light and agile as "basic" roadsters
  • Trunk space is compromised by the top
  • Cabin can get quite turbulent with the top down

Likes:

  • Edgy styling
  • 332-horsepower V-6!
  • Rev-matching manual transmission
  • Solid performance/dollar ratio

Dislikes:

  • Lots of tire noise
  • Prominent drivetrain noise
  • Thrifty interior
