Bottomline The TT is a little more engaging to drive than before, but it doesn’t stand out in the crowd quite like the original one did when it was new. The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class combines the romance of a small roadster with grand-touring comfort, as well as the poise and performance of a larger sportscar. The 2008 Porsche Boxster performs brilliantly, and looks and feels the part, delivering a modern take on the classic roadster experience.

Likes:

  • Punchy and economical 2.0T engine
  • S-tronic gearbox is an automatic without compromise
  • Good driving position and great seats
  • More upscale, understated interior outclasses the competition
  • Tight, well-isolated soft top for roadster
  • Cargo space isn’t compromised

Dislikes:

  • Doesn’t stand out in the crowd as much as the original TT
  • MMI seems out of place in a small roadster
  • V-6 model doesn’t feel much faster

Likes:

  • Borrows styling from the more expensive SLR McLaren and SL
  • Great seats
  • Very settled ride, for a roadster
  • Well-designed retractable hardtop
  • More than adequate acceleration (SLK350 and SLK55)

Dislikes:

  • Doesn't feel as light and agile as "basic" roadsters
  • Trunk space is compromised by the top
  • Cabin can get quite turbulent with the top down

Likes:

  • Great acceleration
  • Breathtaking handling
  • Iconic styling
  • Er, it's a convertible Porsche?

Dislikes:

  • Audio systems
  • Short on storage areas
