Bottomline The TT is a little more engaging to drive than before, but it doesn’t stand out in the crowd quite like the original one did when it was new. The 2009 BMW Z4 isn't a lightweight, basic roadster anymore, but it's a comfortable and exhilarating touring sports car that leaves a lot of flexibility. The 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata brings the classic roadster into the modern era, with fantastic handling and an optional power-folding hardtop.

Likes:

  • Punchy and economical 2.0T engine
  • S-tronic gearbox is an automatic without compromise
  • Good driving position and great seats
  • More upscale, understated interior outclasses the competition
  • Tight, well-isolated soft top for roadster
  • Cargo space isn’t compromised

Dislikes:

  • Doesn’t stand out in the crowd as much as the original TT
  • MMI seems out of place in a small roadster
  • V-6 model doesn’t feel much faster

Likes:

  • Tight hardtop
  • Velvety, responsive engines
  • Excellent dual-clutch automatic
  • Phenomenal poise, with good ride quality
  • Storage bins!

Dislikes:

  • Tight cabin and low windshield header
  • Steering ratio feels too quick
  • Unimpressive standard sound system
  • Bluetooth is optional
  • Pricey

Likes:

  • Engaging handling
  • Perky four-cylinder engine
  • Great manual shifter
  • Retractable hard top is light, useful

Dislikes:

  • Tight cockpit
  • Lack of safety data
  • No stability control on base models
