    What worries me about the above is, rising fatality rates will invariably lead to calls for more draconian safety requirements, even as automakers have more than enough to worry about as it is with 50+ miles per gallon fuel economy requirements.

    It's about time the goverment stopped forcing automakers to make up for stupid drivers. Some safety regulations have led to good advancements (airbags, stability control, etc.), but at some point we are faced with whether the benefit of the next advancement is worth the cost to the consumer and reduction in fuel economy. If the vehicle is the main factor is protecting people from the next guy on the road, we should all be driving M1 Abrams tanks. There should be more incentives to get irresponsible drivers off the road. Stop making be pay for those drivers in my insurance... make them pay for their own bill and feel the full brunt of the pain.
