    Great idea to go over a new car with a fine tooth comb before leaving the dealership. I worked at a Saab dealer in the 80's -- and cars would come in beat up from the trucking company. I even watched a carrier drag several new cars through some trees within sight of the dealer once. Anyway, the attitude of the dealer was if the consumer didn't catch anything before driving off the lot -- it was their problem. BTW, one thing I always do is to sit down and read the owner's manual after a purchase. You learn some interesting stuff -- and can bookmark where important data, like the amount of oil needed at changes, etc., resides.

    Wow, that took some serious cajones for that dealership to try to pull that off with you. Especially after you crawled around the car poking and prodding for half an hour. So dumb. But I loved this piece because consumers are getting more and more demanding regarding the utter perfection of their new cars. Of course there are always mistakes made with any car but having toured VW's exemplary Passat factory in Tennessee really made me feel they are serious about quality. At that point they were tearing down and destroying more finished models than they were shipping off to sell to ensure perfect quality. Now, if they could just build the Jetta there.

    My Passat TDI just reached 6,000 miles. I'm getting about 38mpg in mixed suburban and highway. (My 2002 Audi A6 got 20 for the same road mix.) The front seat is the best I have ever had in any car (I'm 6' and thin). The power is ample and the handling very acceptable for a mid size sedan. BUT, The OEM tires are so-so. When starting, the wheels spin too easily on dry pavement and are terrible on wet. There is excessive road noise from the rear due either to the tires or lack of sound deadening. The brakes are very touchy at very low speeds as in parking, slow traffic etc. I was told this was due to a pad compound change. My last comment, I would rate the manuals a "C". Worst omission, no summary of the unique diesel service items.
