What did they do? Drive at 55 MPH, windows closed, no A/C on? I had a 1985 Mazda 626 diesel & could have probably beat that feet but I had the spare tire well replaced with an extra 18 gallon tank. I could easily drive from LA to Mpls. with one fill up in Cheyenne, Wyo. because that was where diesel was the cheapest, then drive around the Twin Cities for a week before filling up. I also had a 1983 Nissan diesel before I bought the Mazda. It averaged 42+ MPG for the over over 50,000 miles I drove it before buying the Mazda. I keep a log on every gallon of fuel I buy down to 3 decimal points & I added it up out of curiosity to see what my 50,000 mile average was. This included about 2/3ds LA City/freeway driving & using the A/C when warrented

If it was a little more reasonably priced I would buy one almost $30000 for a small car is ridiculous put a little more in the pot get a ram with a Cummings may not get 40 mpg but it will last forever and haul a house

You should check before you say "small car". The Passat is larger than Camry, Fusion, etc. it's interior room surpasses almost anything in the class, if not everything, including Sonata, Kia, et al.

As far as speed goes, best milage occurs in high gear (6th); I would say about 60/65 MPH on this car; they state that they drove normally; Still very good mileage; would like to see it certified; maybe VW can trck to verify. I drove VW Rabbit (non-Turbo) Diesel in the early 80s from Kentucky it couldn't get above 2nd gear in the mountains; on average it got about 48MPG.

Must have been a fun trip-NOT. Driving at at snail's pace can improve mileage on any vehicle. Of course, they can push it and get even better mileage.
