The 2012 Beetle gas engine only gets up to 31MPG hwy, USA EPA. Pretty crappy in my opinion for a small car. I know their diesel engines are great by why is VW so behind with gas engine efficiency?

Not sure if you were driving the right car. The current 2.5L 5-cyl Beetle is rated at 30 mpg city and 40 mpg hwy. VW's current TDI lineup is getting roughly 42 and 60. If you averaged 25 mpg with a TDI, either something was wrong with the car, or you may have been driving the 2.0L TSI.

Strike that... Your EPA mpg rating are different than ours.

Will it cost almost twice what the gas version costs, like the Jetta?
