    "car guys" should stay away...that is what the GLI is for. The Jetta Base model is intended for people thatwould have otherwise not shopped VW because they percieve them to be too expensive. It's working, the base model is by far the fastest turning trim.

    This car uses the 102bhp 1.2TSI engine in Europe as the 'base' engine... It's actually slightly faster due to the lighter weight of the engine. So why isn't it used in the US?
    Drum breaks :/? Does the base model have Stability Control in the US? You can't have it with drums here...

    You forgot to mention the return to a solid rear beam from a multilink rear suspension.
