    Odd considering that some of the cars offered by the German brands are amongst the most efficient and technologically advanced on the planet (in their class).
    I suspect that the problem is that these more efficient and dare I say mundane offerings aren't available in North America as yet. But they are being made...
    Therefore, the brands solution might be to offer them to the US market on a to order basis whilst at the same time maintaining US stock of the stuff that actually sells. This way they can truthfully say that they offer a range of fuel efficient vehicles (which brings down their economy average and therefore tax load) but few consumers buy them.

    Four, luxury marques could absorb EV start-ups to accomplish the same thing as Three. See Aston Martin and their efforts with the Toyota/Scion IQ as another possible work-around.
