    "Nice roundup!"

I'm not sure Subie owners have ever manifested "their usual abandon"! We tend to be thoughtful, deliberate, and measured. Ahem.
Indeed, later on you call the Outback "deliberate"--the perfect choice of words. Earlier Subies were positively agricultural, but they've moved closer to the mainstream of late.
Agree that the old 4-speed autobox is one of the Outback's weak spots. Will be very curious to see what the CVT is like, though like Colin, I'm predisposed against 'em.
As for the frameless windows, they often start to generate wind roar after awhile. Those I won't mind losing, honestly. As for the higher beltline, we'll see ....

"Great in theory, reality is different..."

A recent visit to my Subaru dealer to check out the Outbacks was a true dissapointment. Of the 20 or so they had on hand none had Navigation and most were Brown, Green or Beige, and all had some scary Buick-ish fake wood accents. (I'm more of a Red/Black/Silver kind of guy.) When I asked the salesman if the transmission was a 4- or 5-speed he replied, "No, it's an automatic." That was my cue to leave.
