The US market could be more Eurpoean than Europe. The Europeans & Japanese don't have nearly as great of distances to cover. As gas continues to climb over the coming decade expect US consumer demand for fuel efficiency to blow by the foreigners. However we won't need cars to be compact. We'll discover that we can live with a larger footprint if the vehicle is aerodynamic and light weight.

There are 100,000,000+ Americans living in narrow corridors. Currently most either drive up and down congested I-95 or fly miserable shuttles from Boston or NY to DC, while a Euro-style TGV fast train would do the 500 miles in 2-3 hours, and the 200 miles in 1 hour. You do not even need a MAGLEV 300 MPH+ they got in Shanghai which I took on July 1, 2006.
The lack of a FAST Train network in the East coast and west coast corridors, and maybe in the SA-D-HOU Triangle and the Clev-Chicago corridor, is unbelievably shortsighted.
The cars of the future for th erest of the USA can be 50+ MPG Fuel Efficient MODERN Diesels, and could be full-sized too, and even made from cheapo steel. They do NOT need all that HP to fly over flatland, and persistent high gas prices will make them real in 3-5 years.
