VW SEZ: BUT THIS TIME the TDI will be delivered to you fans in August 2008 FOR SURE-SURE-SURE!
Come August, they'll say WAIT-WAIT-WAIT just another itzybitzybitzy longer, then later another itzybitzybitzy more time, because the exhaust catalyst still needs another itzybitzybitzy more work!
Too much itzybitzybitzy-hype! I'm gonna get a Subaru!

"Mileage estimates from VW are 57 highway 42 city… I feel sorry for all the suckers that bought a Prius"

    Keep Dreaming!

I have no idea where you found those #'s but I'm skeptical

The SportWagen is 100 pounds heavier @ 3220lb than it's predecessor and makes more 40 more hp. It has 16 inch wheels (heavier, more rotating mass) with 205/55 (wider, heavier tires).

My guess is that in automatic trim the sport wagen will have trouble cracking 40 mpg.

The only advantage it might have is an increased CD (coefficient of drag) but even that won't make a huge difference.

This is just one more page in the continuing story of auto manufacturers using technology to increase power and sustain "acceptable" mileage. If they really wanted to make the car get 50, they could, but they'd have to detune it substantially and it would almost certainly have to be equipped a manual gear box, with tall top gear, all rolling on 15's with very hard tires (Michelin energy or the like).

I'm glad to see VW re-entering the diesel and wagon markets, but mileage will remain to be seen.

    sorry; Sportwagen

Jetta SPOTSWAGON?? This car is a Golf Stationwagon in Europe =)

  • GaryOwen Posted: 4/4/2008 4:06pm PDT

What will the cruising range be? I hope they didn't shrink the fuel tank to offset the higher mileage! with a 20 gal tank & 50 MPG highway you could go 1,000 miles before refueling!

I like both the boxy wagons and the new ones..Love the TDI.. And Yes those prius buyers will be abandoning their junkpiles just as soon as the battery packs start to fail and nobody will want to pay 12000 to replace it. Then you will see Prius's abandoned by the side of the road !

Man I just got a 2008 Passat wagon and a 2008 Golf .:R32 but this might be another addition to the driveway. In a TDI form it will most def rock =)

I LOVE my 2007 Jetta sedan, may now consider getting the wagon when it is launched.
The transition from sedan to wagon has been very successful...very good looking.

Nice ... I'm looking forward to the TDI version since I'm currently without my diesel -- sold it a few month ago. The wait for the new VW TDI models is excruciating!

  • Chris Posted: 4/3/2008 6:03pm PDT

I own one of those "boxy" older versions of the Jetta Wagon and I have to say that I'm really disappointed with the way this car looks.

Are these in US gallons or Imperial Gallons (20% bigger)?

  • Tom Posted: 4/3/2008 1:21pm PDT

VW's website states the Jetta TDI's will be released this Fall, who told you the Sportwagen TDI won't be out till next year?

  • Ed Posted: 4/3/2008 10:50am PDT

"Coming next year is the option that many VW fans are waiting for — the new Jetta diesel wagon. The 2.0-liter TDI version will meet the tough new U.S. diesel emissions requirements and will be offered in all 50 states, without having to use a urea aftertreatment like the Bluetec Benzes."

It should be able to get actual Highway 45-50 MPG with the TDi and 45 MPG overall.

CR tested a smaller, and smaller engined, Golf TDI a few years ago and got actual 55 Highway
